An Introduction To A Basic Skincare Routine

3 July 2020

Hello Dollies! Welcome to the first Skincare post on The Dolly Diaries! Today we want to highlight the key elements that we believe should be non negotiable in your basic skincare routine. There are two very important things to take into consideration to ensure success in your basic skincare routine! One, knowing what your skin type is: normal, dry, combination or oily; and two, knowing what your skin concerns are. By knowing this, you can easily determine what a successful basic skincare routine would look like for you.

There are 4 very important steps that should form part of your routine:

1. Cleansing - Cleansing is important as it removes make-up and excess sebum and debris from the skins’ surface. Cleansing creates a ‘clean canvas’ for optimal product penetration of products applied afterwards.

2. Toning - This is an optional step, but still very important as it is the last step of the cleansing process. Toning helps with removing excess make-up or debris left on the skin after cleansing. For me toning is very important, as it aids in balancing the pH of the skin post cleansing.

3. Moisturise - Moisturisers are important when it comes to treating skin concerns. A day cream is important as it acts as a barrier on the skin, leaving the skin hydrated and nourished. Active

ingredients such as AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) or Retinol's should only be used in night creams as it could cause harm to your skin if used during the day. Also, just like our bodies, our skin is most active during the night, therefore it is very beneficial to use active ingredients in your night cream.

4. Sunscreen - Sunscreen! Sunscreen! and more sunscreen! I cannot stress this enough. For me sunscreen is the most important part of your daily skincare routine, no one should leave their house in the morning without applying sunscreen. Sunscreen helps to protect our skin against all harmful UVA/UVB rays, pollution and environmental damage. Not using sunscreen can cause pigmentation and premature ageing to the skin.

These are a few basic skincare elements that I would recommend you definitely incorporate into your daily skincare routine. If you are not sure what your skin type is, follow this link to an easy and quick quiz that will help you identify your skin type! Do remember though, the use of any form of medication for your skin can have an influence on your skin type and as the quiz does not accommodate for medication, results may be skewed - so do use your discretion! Ultimately, no one knows your skin as well as you do!

In the coming weeks we will be talking products, more elements to add to your routine, different skin concerns, and also deep diving into the different skin care types!

Until next time,
